How to Use the Auto Loan Calculator

  1. Enter the vehicle price – the sticker price or negotiated price of the car.
  2. Add your down payment – the amount you pay upfront (reduces the loan amount).
  3. Enter the annual interest rate (APR) – the rate offered by your lender.
  4. Choose the loan term – typically 3 to 7 years for auto loans.
  5. Click Calculate Payment to see your monthly payment, total interest, and total cost.

Auto Loan Payment Formula

Monthly auto loan payments use the standard amortization formula:

M = P × [r(1+r)n] ÷ [(1+r)n − 1]

  • M – Monthly payment
  • P – Loan principal (vehicle price minus down payment)
  • r – Monthly interest rate (annual APR ÷ 12)
  • n – Total number of monthly payments

Worked Example

You buy a car for $25,000 with a $5,000 down payment, a 6.5% APR, and a 5-year (60-month) term:

  • Loan principal: $25,000 − $5,000 = $20,000
  • Monthly rate: 6.5% ÷ 12 = 0.5417%
  • Monthly payment: $391.32
  • Total interest over 5 years: $3,479.44
  • Total cost: $28,479.44

Our Testing Process

Every calculator on DaProfitClub is tested before publication. For this Auto Loan Calculator, we verified payment calculations against bank amortization schedules and the standard loan formula, tested edge cases (0% APR, large down payments, short and long terms), and confirmed the tool works on desktop and mobile browsers. Results are rounded to the nearest cent for accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I put as a down payment on a car?

Financial experts typically recommend a down payment of at least 20% for a new car and 10% for a used car. A larger down payment reduces your loan amount, monthly payment, and total interest paid.

What is a good interest rate for an auto loan?

Auto loan rates vary by credit score and market conditions. Borrowers with excellent credit often qualify for the lowest rates, while lower scores mean higher APRs. Always compare offers from banks, credit unions, and dealerships.

Is a longer loan term better for a car?

A longer term lowers your monthly payment but increases total interest significantly. For example, stretching a loan from 5 to 7 years can add thousands in interest. Choose the shortest term with a payment you can comfortably afford.

Does this calculator include taxes and fees?

No. This calculator estimates the loan payment based on price, down payment, rate, and term. Sales tax, title, registration, and dealer fees are not included — add them to the vehicle price for a more complete estimate.
